Social networking apps are now an industry within the mobile world and it seems that there is a new entrant popping up every month pushing the boundaries of human to human interaction via smartphones. So I went hunting for an original – one of the first of these companies to market and found myRete, makers of WhosHere.
Co-founder Stephen Smith and his partner launched WhosHere in 2008 when there were only a handful of apps in Apple’s AppStore and since then it has been downloaded over 3,000,000 times, users have exchanged over 3 billion text messages and they have recently announced revenue of over $1 million.
This is the story of WhosHere – the reason why they started it, how they have generated revenue (very interesting use of virtual goods), how they scaled their infrastructure, how they innovate within their product and how they have bootstrapped this to profitability.
