TuneMe: How this android app is generating $100 per day in advertising revenue – with founder John Hotovy

Can you make money from in-app advertising? That’s the question that brought John Hotovy, founder of Atonality Mobile to UNTETHER.tv.

John developed the auto tune app, TuneMe, for Android and offered it for free supported by advertising through the traditional mobile models. After hundreds of thousands of downloads he’s got some great insight into generating revenue (you can do it without a million downloads), product design and development (a learning curve in UI development) and marketing.

We do take our time discussing the different advertising services he has used – AdMob and Pontiflex AppLeads – and which has been more successful for him (hint: NOT AdMob).

What I loved about this episode was John’s openness to try just about anything for TuneMe. Although he hails from Lincoln Nebraska his story is something happening all over the world and all because of mobile.

Enjoy!

Macadamian
When my company needed to develop a key mobile product, one that I was counting on as a new source of revenue I knew exactly who to turn to – Macadamian. They delivered on time, with incredible attention to detail and I was able to get product into customers hands faster than I thought possible. I’ve personally known them for 10 years and they do make great products even better.

Pontiflex

So you’ve taken some of the advice that has come from UNTETHER.tv guests, built an app and now you are turning your attention to generating some hard earned revenue. Then you should be looking at Pontiflex AppLeads. Some of your peers who are using AppLeads are earning CPMs 100X the industry average. You can run signup ads from top brands and it won’t take your precious users out of your app.

  • Great interview Rob. Very informative and interesting – the challenges that mobile developers face that no one ever thinks about. Found via quora.

  • @c71397a5a869749af49b6fdf186338f6:disqus thanks for the comment. As you know, there are MANY more challenges that mobile developers face…Hopefully this sheds a little light on ways around a few of them.

  • Great interview, however I downloaded the app and they seem to be using Google to serve ads to mobile devices… so I think they have transitioned off Pontiflex.

  • @6b8e658fd7984b382204aac7df80dfc2:disqus thanks for the comment! Saw that – John said he does some a/b testing with the other networks. Not sure if that is the case but it would be a good strategy in order to make sure he is making as much as possible.
