QIK: How a mobile video company sold to SKYPE for $150 million – with co-founder Bhaskar Roy

Why climb Everest? Because it is there. That’s the same approach Bhaskar Roy and his QIK co-founders took when attacking the problem of mobile video. It was one thing to capture it but quite a different technical challenge to stream it live from a smartphone.

Disruption isn’t easy and that’s what the promise of the technology that QIK has built is based upon – that and solid engineering talent. So solid was the technology and team that QIK was acquired by SKYPE earlier this year for $150 million as they started looking into the best way of engaging with mobile users.

This is a growing piece of the mobile puzzle and one that QIK has been pioneering for 4 years. This is the story of how they built the technology, launched the product by accident (thanks to a fortunate meeting with Robert Scoble in line at an Apple store), interested tier one investors Andreessen-Horowitz and eventually why SKYPE was interested in buying them.

Is Bhaskar seasoned? Yup. And this session is full of anecdotes and insight into building a company in an emerging industry.
