iPads good for more than just browsing

The knock against the iPad and most tablets seem to focus on the fact that it is an exceptional media consumption device but not so good at anything else – well, two recent announcements are a clear sign that that is changing and changing quickly.

We’ve all marvelled at the retail experience that is the Apple store – no cash registers, sales where you stand (unless you want to pay with cash) and helpful people everywhere. Is this the future of retail? Mobile devices everywhere and no cash registers? Well, Home Depot, Nordstrom, Urban Outfitters and now Lowe’s are rolling out devices by the 1000’s – 42,000 in the most recent announcement by Lowes. And smaller companies have started using iPads as Point of sale devices for ordering out of inventory items, table-top ordering of food and even cash registers.

The reason this is important to you is simple – integrating mobile into your bricks and mortar store doesn’t only mean coupons, location-aware applications or your own mobile app. It means using this technology to better serve your customer where they stand and never leaving a customer disappointed.
