Recipe for success according to SMRTGuard’s Rob Kao: Start your company during the financial ruin of 2009 and then make some lemonade.

Rob Kao is an entrepreneur — make no mistake about that. He took what was a limitation in the BlackBerry world and built a product to fill the void. All this during the worst global recession since, well, ever.

The first thing that struck me about Rob and his story is the absolute resolve he has at making a product that changes with the needs of his customers and partners. The second is the tireless effort that he has expended over the past 14 months building SMRTGuard into a fledgling and respected player in the data protection business on BlackBerry and Android.

I’m not sure if Rob thought of himself as an entrepreneur before this venture but it is easy to see that he has been bitten by this affliction and life as he knew it is over. Welcome to the club buddy!

  • I really like the interview – only one thing that I would kindly ask to adjust: the volume difference between the host (Rob W.) and the guest (Rob K.) is so huge – that's quite hard to follow the story – I just had the same experience with the Interview with Kyle (BlackBerryCool) – it would be quite nice if you find a way to equalize the volume between both – Thanks so much

Thanks Matthias — I will fix the audio going forward. Always assumed people didn't want to hear me, just the smart folks I was interviewing 🙂 Look for the next “What's cool in BlackBerry” session with modified audio later this afternoon and let me know if it is better.

  • Yes the new BBCool Episode (III) is way better – even if the stupid German (me) just “now” understand the motivation behind this genius move – I fully agree that the intelligent stuff is always coming from the remote site 😉
